  3. Thanx to Mega-gamer for lending me the 17Bit Phase 5 CD :-)

  5. The Seventeen Bit phase 5 CD is a big change from their past CDROMs.
  6.  
  7. The reason being is that they've moved from that nice little blue
  8.  
  9. interface they had to a workbench type interface like Amiga Guide, in
  10.  
  11. fact it may even be Amiga guide (it is you know).
  12.  
  13. As soon as workbench has loaded I had to click on a few Assign gizmos
  14.  
  15. just to let the Amiga know where everything is.
  16.  
  17. No problem at all, it works fast and it works fine.
  18.  
  19. Unlike previous CDs the whole library of disks isn't set out like
  20.  
  21. it used to be i.e all together in one BIG list.

  23. You are given a set of options i.e utils section, demos,        #4More>>>
  24. @5
  25. disk-mags etc.
  26.  
  27. There's also a listing for AGA stuff which contains great new A1200
  28.  
  29. utils. The options even allows you to mix the whole catalogue together
  30.  
  31. so that everything on the CD is in one big list, sort of like it was
  32.  
  33. on the older CDs.

  35. The CD mainly comprises of disks from late 1994 to mid 1995.
  36.  
  37. Up to date enough I would say. 
  38.  
  39. When you first look at the CDs contents you feel somewhat `ripped off'
  40.  
  41. due to the fact that there doesn't seem to be very much on it.
  42.  
  43. In fact you would be right in saying that there isn't as much on the
  44.  
  45. CD as previous discs because there isn't!
  46.  
  47. The thing is with the older CDs 17 Bit included ARUG disks, NAUG #4More>>>

  49. disks and Assassins disks, they don't anymore.

  51. @5Anyway if you spend some time looking right through the CDs contents
  52.  
  53. you will find that there is a bit more than you first thought.

  55. Anyway, back to the contents.

  57. There are several fairly up to date disk magazines which I had a good
  58.  
  59. look at, most of them are scene disk mags, plus there's the usual
  60.  
  61. Grapevine collection on there. Well worth a look.
  62.  
  63. There are plenty of utils on the disk, this is probably the best 
  64.  
  65. selection to look through, I found super DMS on there and it was
  66.  
  67. pretty good. I can't say I've ever seen that disk anywhere else!
  68.  
  69. Another set of disks I like are the Robs Hot Stash (Utils) disks
  70.  
  71. with compilations of very useful and up to date utilities   #4More>>>
  72.  
  73. which are..... very up to date, not to mention useful.
  74.  
  75. For music freaks, there are a few disks with module compilations,
  76.  
  77. these aren't just your average 'pulled off another CD' collection
  78.  
  79. and some of them are pretty good, if you're in to that sort of thing.

  81. Those generous peeps at 17Bit have included a nice search feature
  82.  
  83. which is erm, nice of them.
  84.  
  85. Anyone who has seen the Zoom CD will get a feeling of Deja vous because
  86.  
  87. the CDs contain similar stuff and have a very very very similar interface.
  88.  
  89. But, if it was a choice between the Zoom CD and 17 Bit, I personally 
  90.  
  91. would go for the 17 Bit Phase 5 CD because the Zoom CD has a heavy
  92.  
  93. bias towards those Klondike card things, which I'm not really in to,
  94.  
  95. but I've been informed that there are loads and loads of different#4More>>>

  97. Klondike card sets on Zoom, so if you're into Klondike then definitely
  98.  
  99. @5Zoom otherwise go for Phase 5. Simple as that.

  101. There isn't really much more I can say about the Phase 5 CD, apart
  102.  
  103. from the fact that if you've collected any previous 17Bit CDs
  104.  
  105. (I have 17Bit collection + Phase 4) prepare to be a little disappointed
  106.  
  107. because there isn't quite as much on the CD and that nice blue interface
  108.  
  109. has gone..... Kaput, though if you are collecting them all I wouldn't
  110.  
  111. put you off buying the Phase 5 CD, all as I'm saying is if you are
  112.  
  113. trying to choose 1 CD from the 5 available from 17Bit, definitely go
  114.  
  115. for the Phase 4, it's reasonably up to date, full of good stuff
  116.  
  117. and will keep you occupied for months.

  127. Comment: I wasn't too keen on it, but there are some useful utils
  128.          disks on there.
